Making Sense of Auto Insurance Coverage

Insurance policies of any type are written in legalese and use jargon common in the insurance industry, but not to ordinary policyholders. Understanding the type and extent of coverage an individual has through their auto insurance policy can be confusing at best. It’s imperative that people know and understand their coverage and limitations before the need for filing a claim occurs.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This pays for injuries to drivers and passengers sustained in an accident. PIP coverage will pay for 80 percent of what the insurance company deems is reasonable and necessary medical expenses, providing the individual receives initial services within the first 14 days after the accident. If the cost of medical care exceeds the amount of coverage ($10,000 minimum), the injured party can sue for any costs over that amount. PIP coverage also pays a $5,000 death benefit and 60 percent of work-related losses.

Property Damage Liability (PDL)

Florida drivers are required to carry a minimum of $10,000 coverage for property damage that may occur. Drivers can be sued for any amount over that when the costs for repairs or replacement exceed the stated coverage limit in the policy.

No-Fault

Florida is a no-fault insurance state. What that means for motorists is that each driver’s personal auto insurance is responsible for paying the medical costs, damage to the vehicle, and any damage to property or surroundings when an accident happens, no matter who caused the accident.

Uninsured Motorist

Simply put, it’s a driver that doesn’t have any auto insurance coverage. There’s a very good chance that individuals will encounter an uninsured motorist (UM) if they’re involved in an accident. Florida ranks highest in the percentage of uninsured motorists as of Dec. 2021.

Comprehensive Coverage

A policy with comprehensive coverage pays for damages to vehicles in an extensive range of situations that includes accidents, hitting an animal, falling objects, and wind and weather, along with fire, flood, theft and vandalism.
