5 Common Summer Insurance Claims
Summer is a time for enjoying a multitude of outdoor activities, but they also come with an increased potential for disaster. It’s a good time for individuals to inspect any insurance policies they have to ensure that they have adequate coverage and take precautions to prevent disasters.
Break-Ins
Home burglaries escalate sharply during the summer months when people spend more time away from home in recreational pursuits or go on vacation. A broken window in a burglary to gain entrance can easily result in damage to interiors if there’s a storm. That doesn’t count the cost of replacing stolen possessions.
Auto Accidents
More people out and about for work and play pursuits means an increased risk of being involved in a car accident. The number of vehicle accidents increases significant between Memorial Day and Labor Day. It’s often called the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drives.
Boat Accidents
The number of boats on the ocean, local lakes, and waterways increase significantly in the summer. Coast Guard statistics show that in 2020, there were 5,265 accidents, with 3,191 injuries reported and 767 deaths. The state also ranks No. 1 for boat thefts, with only a small fraction of the vessels ever recovered.

Drowning
Water-related activities take place everywhere during the summer. Now is the time to examine swimming pool fences and gates to ensure they don’t provide access to children or even small pets. Rip currents are a danger that occurs all the time in South Florida, but are more noticeable during the summer months. Rip currents are often deadly.
Fire
Embers from firepits, grilling and even candles to repel insects can easily spark a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the peak month for fires is July, followed by May, June and August.
While home-sparked blazes account for many home-related fires, policy holders also need to be aware of the dangers of forest fires. April, May and June are the prime months for forest fires in Florida, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, but that doesn’t mean they can’t occur “out of season.”
