Is Life Insurance Different for Men and Women?

Life is full of inequities depending on an individual’s gender. When it comes to insurance, the same is true. Men and women can obtain the same types of policies for homes, vehicles and life, but there’s a distinct difference in the premiums they’ll pay.

However, women will find that they pay higher insurance rates in 21 states according to research conducted by The Zebra. The bad news for women is that they’ll pay an average of $85 more for car insurance than a man if they live in Florida. Only seven states have laws that prevent insurance companies from factoring gender into insurance rates.

Car Insurance

Women pay a little less for full coverage than their male counterparts, but men pay less for minimum liability coverage than women. According to actuaries and statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, men are more likely to experience road rage, take more chances behind the wheel, and are more likely to have an accident or fatal crash. The age of 25 is a magic number for insurance companies. Men experience a reduction in costs after the age of 25.

Life Insurance

There are also disparities in life insurance premiums for men and women across the nation and they’re based on age and behavior. Insurance companies have determined that men are more likely to die from health-related causes at an earlier age, and participate in dangerous activities and careers, even though the risk decreases as they age. Conversely, older women pay higher rates because they live longer.

Healthcare

Before passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), insurance companies routinely charged women up to 50 percent more for health insurance. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) prohibits that practice for women obtaining their insurance through the ACA.

When obtaining insurance through other means, women are often charged up to 80 percent more than men. Females are considered a higher financial risk for insurers since they live longer, tend to visit their doctor more often, and have children. Insurance companies assert that women’s healthcare issues are often more complex, costly, and women are more prone to developing chronic healthcare issues.
